ROCKY RIVER, OH—Rocky River police shot a woman who was holding a kitchen knife during a confrontation early Monday at an apartment complex, police said.
The 42-year-old woman remains hospitalized at MetroHealth, but her condition was unknown as of Monday afternoon. She was shot once in the upper right torso, Rocky River police Chief George Lichman said during a press conference.
The shooting happened at The Linden House West Apartment Complex, just east of Linden Road, according to a news release from the Rocky River Police Department.
The U.S. Secret Service notified Rocky River police about 1:43 a.m. that an armed woman called them and was threatening others, including Former president Donald Trump. The Secret Service also said the woman threatened to harm herself, Lichman said.
Lichman said he believes the woman has a history of mental health issues, but did not offer any additional details.
Officers confronted the woman when they arrived, and she charged at them with a large kitchen knife, Lichman said. One officer deployed his stun gun, and the other officer simultaneously fired two shots during the encounter, Lichman said.
“From I’ve seen, I’m confident officers acted appropriately,” Lichman said.
The Rocky River Fire Department transported the woman to MetroHealth. No one else was injured, police said.
The woman could face criminal charges in connection with the incident, including felonious assault against a police officer, Lichman said.
Police also did not release the names of the three officers who responded to the apartment complex and were present during the shooting, but they have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete, Lichman said.
The officer who fired the shots has been with the department for 11 years, while the officer who used the stun gun is an eight-year veteran, Lichman said. The third officer, who did not fire a police weapon, has been with the department for four years.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation was on the scene and will handle the case, police said.
